MANAUS (AM) – After the confirmation of two cases of Delta variant in the city of Maués, located 276 kilometers from Manaus, in Amazonas, a task force was created in an attempt to contain the increase of cases. The Foundation for Health Surveillance Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP) and the City Hall of Maués have teamed up to encourage the vaccination of the population and ensure that they follow the procedures for Covid-19 prevention.

In the municipality, two women, 35 and 59 years old, were infected, but did not require hospitalization. According to the FVS-RCP, a team was sent to Maués for an intensive monitoring, with epidemiological investigation actions, tracking of cases, and testing.

Four cases of the variant were also confirmed in Manaus, this week: two women, 40 and 41 years old, and two men, 16 and 74 years old. As explained by the director of the body, Tatyana Amorim, the priority is to ensure the immunization of the population, which is already in the age group 12 to 17 years. According to Tatyana, half of the immunizers received will be destined for Maués and the capital.

“We will make 50% of the vaccines available to the population living in Manaus and around Maués to intensify the vaccination of this public in the age group of 12 to 17 years, which is susceptible, does not have the protection of the vaccine, so that we can vaccinate and reduce the impacts of the possible entry of this variant in the Amazon. The cases are imported by epidemiological link, so it is important to monitor and track cases and contacts, and vaccination is the most powerful way to prevent serious cases and deaths”, he said.

Extra caution with Delta

The Maués City Hall said that the servers of the Municipal Health Department (Semsa) aligned strategies to ensure greater surveillance and monitoring as to the cases reported by FVS-RCP. “Semsa guides the population to do their part and continue prevention even after taking the two doses of the vaccine against Covid-19”.

The mayor of the city Júnior Leite (PSC) stressed, in social networks, the drop in the number of deaths by Covid-19 and that vaccination keeps moving forward. “We are having positive results in our municipality, with no deaths from the disease since June 25, our vaccination is advancing and currently we have 73.07% of the population vaccinated with the first dose (37,700 inhabitants over 18 years old), but we cannot relax”, he said.

For infectologist Nelson Barbosa, care must be redoubled due to the high level of transmissibility of the Delta variant, which originated in India. “While each infected with the Delta variant can transmit the virus to five to eight people, those infected with the P1 variant can transmit to two to four people. We have to vaccinate the population”, he said.
