MANAUS – The exhibition Resilient Amazon Architecture, which takes place from September 4 to November 4 this year, at the Sensory Trail of the Museum of Amazonia (Musa), in the capital of Amazonas, intends to connect the Musa to the Asian continent, through the Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2021.

Conceived by the Núcleo Arquitetura Moderna na Amazônia (Nama) from the Faculdade de Tecnologia da Universidade Federal do Amazonas (Ufam), the exhibition went through a selection process with 1,100 proposals from all over the world, sent to participate in the Biennale, which will be held in the Korean capital, Seoul, from September 16 to October 31, 2021, and is curated by renowned architect Dominique Perrault.

In Brazil, only three cities in the country were selected to participate in the event: Messina & Rivas, from São Paulo, Gustavo Utrabo, from Formoso do Araguaia, in Tocantins, and Nama, from Manaus, in Amazonas, which will be participating in the Thematic Cities Biennial.

At the Biennal, the Resilient Architecture in the Amazon exhibition will be broadcasted in a space built by Nama, at the Dongdaemum Design Plaza, a multipurpose complex designed by Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, in South Korea’s capital. The idea is to show the importance of the Amazon Forest at the event in Seoul, through the representation of Musa.

The coordinator of Nama, Marcos Cereto, responsible for the curatorship of the exhibition, that is, for the conception, assembly and supervision of the work, explains that the institution’s proposal exposes architectures, in Manaus, that value the human resources and the technologies available in the Amazon metropolis. A factor that, according to him, also represents the connection between the natural and the artificial.

Known for her futuristic spaceship work, star architect Zaha Hadid is behind the design of Dongdaemun Design Plaza, a Seoul landmark (Seoul Government/Reproduction).

“Just as the fruits of our trees are appreciated around the world, we also have the fruits of industry that ensure the preservation of the forest and a means of survival for the population. The works represent the connection between the natural and the artificial and show a utopian Amazon where it is possible to reconcile the artisanal with the industrial”, explained Cereto.

The exhibition brings together 15 works and projects made in Manaus, and is held by architects Alexia Convers, AMZ Architects, Diogo Lazari, Laurent Troost, Marcelo Borborema, Muna Hauache, Paulo Lindenberg, Roberto Moita, Santos Damasceno Architects, Vitor Pessoa and Welton Oliva.
