MANAUS – The Manacapuru City Hall, municipality of the Metropolitan Region of Manaus (RMM), suspended, on Thursday, 2, the New Year’s Eve party in the city. In a note posted on social networks, the Municipal Executive explains that the decision considered the emergence of the new variant of Covid-19, called Ômicron, and the concern with the increase in cases of the virus in the municipality.

“After a meeting with the Health Secretariat team, analyzing the emergence of a new variant of coronavirus and the concern with a possible increase in cases in the municipality, Mayor Beto D’Ângelo [Republicans] decided not to hold the New Year’s Eve party in Manacapuru,” says the statement from the city government.

With the decision, the municipality becomes the first of the Amazon to cancel the New Year’s Eve party and goes against the capital, whose event is maintained with the singer Luan Santana as the main attraction. In the capital, however, Justice is analyzing a request to cancel the megafest.

In a broadcast on Facebook, Beto D’Ângelo recalled that, in this same period in 2020, the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic began, and in order that the same does not happen this year, the decision was made to suspend the New Year’s Eve party. The mayor also called on the population to get vaccinated.

“What we can’t do is play with all this. We met yesterday with our health team and made the decision: Manacapuru will not promote New Year’s Eve this year-end, however, we will do a work of prevention, guidance and reinforcement in the health system, so that we can serve people, “reinforced the mayor.

The chief of the municipal executive also highlighted that the region is going through a rainy period, called “Amazonian winter”, where flu viruses usually circulate, such as the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which is usually confused with the new coronavirus. For Beto D’Ângelo, to have the New Year’s Eve party in the middle of the “Amazonian Winter” and the appearance of the new variant would be imprudent.

In Manaus, the Amazonas Justice Department is analyzing a request to cancel the New Year’s Eve mega-party, which will have as main attraction and for the amount of R$ 600 thousand the singer Luan Santana, at the Ponta Negra beach. The popular action was proposed on Monday, 29, by Councilman Rodrigo Guedes (PSC), and is under consideration of Judge Etelvina Lobo Braga, the 3rd Court of the Public Treasury.

In the document, the parliamentarian talks about a possible new wave of Covid-19 in the capital, mainly, caused by Omicron and remembers other cities that have already canceled the New Year’s Eve and even the Carnival 2022. In the country, at least 14 capitals have already canceled the party, as in Belo Horizonte (MG), Salvador (BA) and São Paulo (SP).

Rodrigo Guedes also recalls that the singer Luan Santana’s show in the capital of Amazonas was settled with a fee of almost double the amount that the artist usually charges in other regions of the country. For the parliamentarian, “allocate $ 600 thousand without any transparency and advertising with national artists, encouraging agglomerations that endanger the life and health of citizens, does not seem to make sense for the moment experienced in the national scene, perhaps even municipal”.
