ALTAMIRA (PA) – In Pará, the two acronyms that now form the União Brasil party have four state lawmakers: three for DEM and one for PSL. CENARIUM consulted political scientist André Luis Buna, master in Political Science and member of the Political Institutions Group of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), to analyze the impacts of the creation of a new party when the eyes are already turned to the 2022 campaign.

“Contrary to what many are thinking, the creation of the party will not add a greater number of lawmakers and senators. Up to 30 members of parliament may resign or be invited to disconnect from the new acronym [for party ideological reasons]. The possibility of expulsion was even considered”, he said, reinforcing that the big beneficiary of this new party would be the Progressive Party (PP), of which President Jair Bolsonaro has already been a member. “There is a possibility that the PP will become the largest party in the House of Representatives”, which would also benefit the parliamentarians affiliated in Pará.

André Buna also believes that “there is no guarantee that these parliamentarians will remain in União Brasil. “The decision [to create the party] is a national one, made by national leaders who do not always respect the opinions of the regional leaders”, he added.

The scientist also adds that this lack of communication with municipalities and states, far from the big centers where the decisions are made, can result in a stampede, as in the case of Celso Sabino. “He had a desire for leadership within the PSDB [the party for which he was elected in 2018], and he found this opportunity in the PSL, and he succeeded. So much so that, today, he is president of União Brasil, in Pará”, André explained.

Buna closes by analyzing that “by a simple competition, these new supporters may have an internal dispute. If they feel a difficulty or rejection, they will look for a party to facilitate their permanence in Congress or in the State House”, he finished.

Ideologies

Seen as a right-wing party, União Brasil may face difficulties due to ideologies, but the “Bolsonarist wave” may give other paths to the new acronym. About the impacts that the creation of the new party could directly cause to the current government of Pará, led by Helder Barbalho (MDB), Buna observes the following scenario.

“The campaign today is permanent, so we don’t see any candidate with the capacity to compete. Apparently, the state government is alone in this dispute”, points out the scientist, who adds this to the high approval of the current state government, driven by the Covid-19 campaign, facing the president of the Republic himself.
