BRASILIA – Representatives of the Amazonian Front of Mobilization in Defense of Indigenous Rights (Famddi) delivered to the president of the CPI of Covid, Senator Omar Aziz (PSD/AM), on Tuesday, 19, a dossier that brings information and impressive reports about the drama of the Covid-19 pandemic among indigenous people, especially those in the Amazon.

The document is signed by various entities and institutions directly or indirectly linked to the indigenous cause, such as the Amazon Indigenous Education and Health Forum (Foreeia); the Association of Teachers of the Federal University of Amazonas (Adua); the Indigenous Missionary Council (Cimi); as well as Associations and Federations representing the indigenous people of Brazil, Peru and Colombia.

The dossier was prepared after the meeting “Violations of indigenous rights and genocide in Amazonas”, in April this year, which was attended by indigenous leaders and lawyers, representatives of indigenous and human rights organizations, parliamentarians and jurists.

At the meeting on Tuesday, were present the federal lawmaker José Ricardo (PT/AM) and Joenia Wapichana (REDE-RR), who are, respectively, vice-coordinator and coordinator of the Mixed Parliamentary Front in Defense of Indigenous People. Both spoke to sensitize Senator Omar Aziz about the seriousness of the pandemic among indigenous people and request that the document be appreciated by the Commission and added to the list of denunciations related to the positioning of the federal government in confronting the pandemic.

Document reveals dramatic stories

“In this pandemic, the indigenous people have been and continue to be contaminated and dying due to many negligence, mainly by the federal government. This Famddi report is very serious. Almost 1,000 indigenous people have died and thousands are still suffering the consequences of Covid. We cannot remain silent in the face of this neglect. That is why we demand accountability”, said José Ricardo.

Lawmaker Joenia Wapichana also left the meeting hoping that the appeal made by the signatories of the dossier will be answered. “We are waiting for the CPI to act with coherence, that from all the accumulated discussion that has taken place, the documents that have been received, to configure the crimes that Bolsonaro has committed”, said the parliamentarian.

The president of Adua, Ana Lúcia Gomes, said that the entities do their role, which is to denounce what is happening to indigenous people. “The State of Amazonas was very affected by the pandemic and this government has shown itself to be inefficient in its management. This government has no appreciation for minorities”, she further said.

The president of the CPI said that he intends to add more information about Amazonas in the CPI’s final report. He told the group that the CPI will create a commission to monitor the indigenous issue and once again reiterated that the drama of the pandemic in Brazil “will not come cheap” for those responsible for the health crisis that has resulted, so far, in more than 600,000 deaths.
