MANAUS – With the arrival of 2022, everyone is getting ready to welcome a new cycle. The sympathies are common in this period in order to attract prosperity and good energy to face the journey of everyday life, both outdoors and at home. For this January 1st, CENARIUM recalls the habit of “cinnamon-blowing”, one of the most popular and accessible charms to attract prosperity and abundance, not only materially, but also emotionally and spiritually.

Even though the real effectiveness of these rites is not scientifically proven, people like teacher Francisca Silva, 60, don’t give up the practice of blowing the spice on the first day of each month. “Some people say it’s silly, but I prefer to believe, to have a positive mindset every time I do it, even because I believe that energies released to the universe reverberate, so why not risk it? It won’t hurt”, says the educator.

Sympathy

According to Ms. Francisca, to perform the step by step charm, all that is needed is the cinnamon powder and to mentalize with faith that it will work. “On the first day of each month, the person should go to the front door of their home or work. In the palm of your right hand hold a handful of cinnamon powder”, explains Francisca.

While blowing the powder around the house, repeat the phrase: ‘When I blow this cinnamon, prosperity will come here. When I blow this cinnamon, abundance will come to stay. When I blow this cinnamon, abundance will dwell here”, teaches the teacher, revealing that she has a cinnamon tree in her backyard and uses the leaves to reinforce the moment of “faith” in the house.

“After I blow, I collect some cinnamon leaves from the tree I am lucky enough to grow in my backyard and burn them at home to smoke the place, besides giving it a good smell, it brings a feeling of welcome and peace that make the moment even more special”, she reveals.

Cinnamon and the Sacred

Cinnamon is an ancient spice, used not only in cooking, but also in mystical rituals associated with love, luck, and wealth. It is also used to ward off negative energies, as an aromatic and creative stimulant in health-oriented practices.

In medicine, cinnamon is also known for fighting bacteria, candidiasis, ulcers, and fungus. Besides having anti-inflammatory properties, it helps fight premature aging and has a thermogenic effect (food that helps burn fat and speeds up the metabolism).

Faith, sympathies, and support

Sympathies seek, in a way, to provide encouragement and hope for what people desire. For the author of the book ‘Believing in Magic: The Psychology of Superstition’, Stuat Vyse, superstitions and sympathies stem from the need for control that human beings have in the face of life, even though they have no control over what is desired, these practices give a certain sense of comfort.

For Xɛ́byosɔnɔ̀n Alberto Jorge, the success of these rites among society is the need to feed the hope that is essentially important for the life of human beings. He points out that the energy unleashed from the human psyche is key to actually making it happen.

“This hope is often placed in the sacred as a way to find a lenitive, a strength to solve that which our conditions and limitations as human beings do not allow us to overcome. That is why the years go by and these traditions remain. Always remembering that faith is the main element for any society”.
