BRASÍLIA – A round of conversation intends to debate ways to obtain greater representation of minorities in the Brazilian political system. Between September 29th and 30th, the Platform of Social Movements for Political Reform will hold an online roundtable with the participation of representatives from social movements, activists and organizations from the North region.

The intention is to build a new political system that gives voice to the whole society without disregarding traditional populations, indigenous people and other Brazilians, with low effective representation in the current system in force. Believing in broad debate and collective awareness as a path to transformation, the Platform promotes the event to make a “political x-ray” of each region of Brazil.

Different models of democracy

The representative of the Forum of the Eastern Amazon (Faor), Marquinho Mota, has great expectations for the round of conversations of the Northern Region. Besides the reunion, even if only virtual, with activists from the region who work in their fields, Marquinho wants to contribute, together with the other participants, with a panorama of what democracy is ideal for the North Region.

“I believe that the main contribution that Faor can give is to bring to the debate, examples of the various democracies implanted in the forest by its original people, in order to break this concept that the model of democracy that we need is a white, European, Jewish, Christian model”, commented Mota.

The Faor member also highlights the importance of more emphasis on the Amazon region. “We need to look at the interior of the Amazon and see that for thousands of years, indigenous people have built a society without class divisions, with a way of living that is a sum of things, always taking into account the common good”, he added.

The technical advisor of social projects of the Brazilian Forum of Solidarity Economy (FBES), Tatiane Valente, reinforces that among the subjects already on the agenda of the round of talks, are issues related to women empowerment and conjuncture analysis. This is so that together, the invited institutions can join forces in the search for a more egalitarian political system.
