MANAUS – The Amazonians were surprised with the sudden change in the value of fuel. The capital of Amazonas already faces the impacts of the adjustment announced by Petrobras on Thursday, 10. The CENARIUM MAGAZINE found that some gas stations are already offering the fuel at R$7.19.

In one of the stations where the CENARIUM was, located at Avenida Boulevard Alvaro Maia, Adrianopolis neighborhood, South-Central zone, an employee who preferred not to be identified said that the change happened around 18h today and that before, the liter of gasoline was sold for R$ 6.59, the common gasoline.

Asked if there were many people looking for the place to fill up, she confirmed that demand is well above what is usually recorded.

“Today is very busy. This afternoon many people were here to fill up their vehicles, but even with the increase the flow of customers didn’t decrease”, informed the attendant.

In another gas station, located on Duque de Caxias street, Centro neighborhood, south zone of Manaus, the flow of cars and motorcycles were intense despite the price of regular gasoline also being R$7.19. In none of the gas stations that the CENARIUM was there were queues.

Price can still go up

Marcus Evangelista, economist and President of Corecon defended that since 2016 Petrobras has the freedom to adjust its prices according to the international market. “Let’s analyze, today. We are with the war between Ukraine and Russia, with the high dollar, so these two factors led the price of oil to break records”, he recalled.

The economist pointed out the high price of the barrel which leads Petrobras to adjust its prices according to the market. “And what is worse, despite this increase that we had now, is that the adjusted price is still not equal to the international market. What does this represent to us? It means that new increases will still happen”, alerted the specialist.

Amazonians react to the increase

The university student Bruna Luanne said that on Thursday, 10, she filled up her vehicle for R$6.63 a liter of gasoline. “I filled up R$50 in a gas station on Nilton Lins Avenue, Flores neighborhood. I only use the car to go to college and to work. This price was already expensive, and the new one, I can’t imagine. These 50 reals last three days at most”, says the student.

“I’m going to start using my father’s car and only use ethanol, which hasn’t increased yet. If it increases too much, this will be the solution”, she explains.

Another student, Brendo Cazuza, also filled up on Thursday, 10, at a gas station between Avenida das Flores and Avenida das Torres. “I filled up around 5:30pm today. But in some places I found gas stations with gasoline selling at R$7.59”, he says.
