Agenda on indigenous territories becomes part of the ‘Amazon Dialogues’ debate in Belém

BELÉM (PA) – Authorities, representatives of civil society, entities and organizations from 8 countries in the Amazon region will discuss the main problems of the largest tropical forest on the planet at the “Amazon Dialogues”, an event held on August 4, 5 and 6, in Belém (PA), at the Hangar Convention Center.

The event will produce five reports from the discussions of each of the plenary-synthesis to be delivered to the eight presidents of the Amazon countries present at the “Amazon Summit”, on August 8 and 9.

Over the three days, more than 10,000 people are expected to circulate around the event site to participate in the five main plenary sessions, four cross-sectional plenary sessions and more than 400 activities organized by social movements, entities and government agencies from Brazil and other countries that make up the Amazon region.

Organization of the Amazon Dialogues

The program of the “Amazon Dialogues” is coordinated by the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and several other ministries, and has a partnership with the Government of the State of Pará and the City of Belém.”The Chief Minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, Márcio Macêdo, coordinator of the “Amazon Dialogues”, points out that the event aims to bring the voice of the peoples of the region to the Amazon Summit.

“The reports will be delivered to the presidents by representatives of Amazonian civil society and in them will be all the reality experienced by indigenous people, by riverine communities, by women, by blacks, by young people in the more than seven million square kilometers covered by the largest rainforest on Earth“, explained Macêdo.

Schedule of the Amazon Dialogues

Each of the plenary sessions will feature seven speakers: four from civil society and three from government, with at least one Brazilian in each category. The topics discussed in the synthesis plenaries will include social participation, eradication of slave labor, health, sovereignty, food and nutritional security, science and technology, energy transition, climate change and the protection of indigenous and traditional peoples of the region.

From the debates of these meetings will be produced the five reports that will be delivered to the presidents participating in the Amazon Summit. The documents will be delivered by five civil society representatives chosen from among the Dialogues participants.

The cross-cutting plenary sessions will discuss the situations of specific groups, such as women, young people and black people in the Amazon region. The three planned meetings will be held in the same space as the synthesis plenaries, in the interval between the two main meetings that take place on August 5 and 6. The discussions of these plenaries may have excerpts included in the reports of the synthesis plenaries.

How to participate in the Amazon Dialogues?

To participate in the Amazon Dialogues in person, it is necessary to be registered for the event. Prior registration has already ended, however, in-person accreditation will be open from 9 am on August 3, and on August 4 to 6 from 7 am.

The federal government informs that it will be possible to follow the transmission of the plenary sessions through the channels of the Brazilian Communication Company – EBC and the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic on Youtube.
