MANAUS – Thinking about strengthening the environmental work and reducing forest degradation, the Government of Amazonas created a primer with strategies to reduce emissions of pollutant gases and strengthen the sustainable development of the State. The document was presented at the Bioeconomy World Forum, which took place this Monday, 18th, in Belem, Para.

Through the State Department of Environment (Sema), the government has been working to establish guidelines and formulate strategies to ensure the conservation of natural resources and biodiversity, sustainable development, bioeconomy, and territorial planning.

According to the state secretary of Environment, Eduardo Taveira, the strategy that the government is adopting is “bold”. “It is also a message of the Amazonas Government’s commitment to concrete actions to avoid climate change and, on the other hand, it is a mechanism that will remunerate the efforts that the state has made to reduce its emissions”, he said.

Eduardo also pointed out that the project also foresees working to combat deforestation and illegal fires in the state. “The main emissions are from these areas, and with this remuneration, through mechanisms such as REDD+*, which the state is now also regulating its environmental services policy to be able to take to COP-26”, he reported.

“We will take this strategy to be able to make investments in Conservation Units (Ucs), in the improvement of the quality of life of riverside communities and the strengthening of an economy for the state. The Government of Amazonas is meeting what the world has been discussing and doing it with a lot of responsibility”, he also highlighted.

Environmental management planning

Because of the understanding of the importance of conserving the Amazon and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the state has been drawing a Plan for Prevention and Control of Deforestation and Burning (PPCDQ-AM) that will order the environmental management until 2022. It will be a bridge, together with the Mais Verde Program, also implemented by the state department.

In total, there will be more than six institutions involved in the execution of the project, in three thematic axes, which are: territorial and environmental planning; bio-economy; and monitoring and command and control. More than R$55 million will be invested, which will have a direct impact on the lives of 2.9 million inhabitants.
