BELÉM – During the event “What is the COP?”, held this Monday, 26th, the Minister Liliam Beatris Chagas de Moura, from the Climate Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), said that the expectation of the government is that the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will be held in the capital city of Pará in 2025, is more important than the COP21 in Paris.

“In 2015, countries presented environmental commitments that have ten-year cycles, so these commitments expire in 2025. So, it will be in Belem that all the countries will present new agreements. It will be the moment of truth, when the leaderships will have to show the results of the Paris Agreement and talk about the new ambitions. Therefore, expectations are very high and Belem has to be prepared”, said Liliam Chagas.

The Paris Agreement is a commitment signed between 195 countries, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In other words, to combat the climate crisis, after several negotiations, the countries signed the agreement, which came into force on November 4, 2016.

The main goal of the Paris Agreement is to keep the planet’s temperature increase well below 2°C to ensure a low-carbon, adaptable, prosperous and fair future for all.

The Amazon is not a sanctuary

In the opening of the meeting, the Secretary of Environment and Sustainability of the State of Pará, Mauro Ó de Almeida, highlighted the importance of hosting the UN conference in Belem, especially because it is a metropolis in the Amazon.

“It is necessary to talk about the Amazon in the Amazon, so that everyone knows that the forest is not a sanctuary. Here, there are more than 30 million people who need care and have to be drawn into the environmental agenda. So we need to understand that as long as there is a dispute between poverty and the environmental agenda, the environmental agenda will always lose. So, let’s unite the agendas, deal with poverty with bioeconomy, while taking care of the environment”, said the secretary.

Schedule

The schedule is a realization of the government of Pará, with the support of the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) and the city of Belém. The opening ceremony will take place at 10am with the theme “Importance of the COP in the Brazilian Amazon”.

Until 6pm, round-tables will be held with the following themes: “Climate change: global context, international agreements, strategic vision, economic transition and the Amazon”, at 11am; “Champions for climate action in COPs”, at 2pm; “Climate Conference – scope of negotiations, results of COPs, UN role, country, state and host city in the organization of the COP”, at 3:30pm; and “COP30 in Belém – structure and preparation”, at 5pm, ending the event.
