MANAUS- On the afternoon of this Saturday, 9, several cities in Brazil and abroad held acts against President Jair Bolsonaro (PL). The demonstrations gathered opposition parties, voters, union forces and social movements that, this time, took to the streets with the slogan “Bolsonaro Never Again”. The protesters claimed against the increase in unemployment, fuel prices, gas and hunger, a reality for many Brazilian families.

In Brasilia, the activists gathered at the Esplanade of the Ministries and went on to the front of the National Museum of the Republic. The act gained support from indigenous people who are in the Brazilian capital because of the “Acampamento Terra Livre”, which has been taking place since April 4th. According to the leader and secretary-general of the National Council of Extractive Populations (CNS), Dione Torquato, besides the ethnic groups, social movements linked to the countryside, forests and water also attended.

“Our brothers and sisters linked to family farmers, landless people, extractivists, and peasants are also present with the war cry ‘United Movements in Defense of mother Earth’, in addition to the demonstrations against the Bolsonaro government that attacks social rights and, above all, the primary sector. We are here in support and solidarity with the indigenous peoples in this struggle”, says Diones.

In an interview for Forum Magazine, the national coordinator of the Central of Popular Movements (CMP) – one of the entities calling for the protests – Raimundo Bonfim, declared that the country is at the limit and the lack of an alternative to fight hunger and unemployment is “unacceptable”.

“Brazil can no longer stand the irresponsibility, crimes, horrors and inhumanity practiced by the government. Bolsonaro has dismantled the country and will leave a legacy of destruction for the Brazilian population and the future governors who will succeed him starting next year. We cannot accept that there are no alternatives to fight hunger, unemployment, misery and inflation,” Bonfim points out.

Besides Brasília, Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and São Luís were also some of the places that stood out due to the intense movement of protesters. In Manaus, the act happened around 4pm, at Praça da Saudade, downtown, however, with a smaller presence of people.
