MANAUS – The sport shooter Cristiane Lemos Batista de Freitas, appointed to be director of Education and Environmental Citizenship of the Ministry of Environment, has never had experience in areas related to the position she will occupy, according to the lawyer’s resume published on the website Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights, where she previously held the position of advisor. The appointment was signed by the Minister of the Civil House, Ciro Nogueira.

Appointment of Cristiane Lemos, published in the Official Journal of the Union.

In her resume, Cristiane describes herself as a “professional with a career developed in companies of various segments and different sizes”, having held executive management and advisory positions and acted as a consultant and of organizational development projects.

She served as an advisor to Osmar Terra at the Ministry of Citizenship in 2019. The following year, she was assigned to the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights, under Damares Alves.

Her experiences are focused on legal advice. Lemos also worked as an assistant at the public company Valec, was an intern at the Regional Electoral Court of the Federal District, and at the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region, also in Brasilia. Nothing related to the environment.

Manifesto

After her appointment, signed by the Chief of Staff, Ciro Nogueira, more than 60 entities, organizations, and leaders linked to environmental education in Brazil published a manifesto against the act.

“We understand the appointment as a mockery, as a disrespect to the professionals in the environmental field committed to environmental education. This nomination is an act of symbolic violence, operating as a manifestation of anti-ecological cultural crusade. The result is the perplexity of the educational collectives of the country, since it is a position of utmost importance to the management of Brazilian environmental education”, says an excerpt of the text.

Pro-armament

In 2021, the new director of the Ministry of Environment participated in a public hearing at the House of Representatives, in defense of the use of weapons by the Brazilian population.

Hearing was held by the Women’s Rights Commission, in December 2021 (Reproduction/ House of Representatives)

“We need to take away this culture that guns kill people. The person who kills people is the one behind the agent, be it a woman or a man. When we say that a woman is not going to take out a gun to kill her husband, her spouse or whoever, it is very hard for us to go off on that tangent, because when your life is at risk, a fishmonger can be much more useful than a firearm, and we have access to this at home. We don’t need to ask permission to have a knife, and the knife is much more lethal”, defended Cristiane.
