MANAUS – The launch of the book-reportage ‘Manaus de Frente para a Floresta’ (Manaus facing the Forest in english), the journalist Sergio Adeodato, will take place on Tuesday, 17, at 18:30, the Impact Hub, located at Avenida Efigênio Salles, 1.299, Aleixo district. The work brings the vision of 60 personalities of the city, anonymous and famous, on the relationship between the metropolis of the Amazon, the forest that surrounds it and the challenges of the region for the future.

The journalist produced texts and gathered photos, data and analyses on the economic, environmental and social aspects of Manaus, the largest capital among the states that comprise the Amazon, with a very important role in climate discussions and sustainable development.

The book is one of the products of the multimedia project ‘Manaus de Frente para a Floresta’, which has the support of Manauscult, Fundação Amazônia Sustentável (FAS), Instituto de Conservação e Desenvolvimento do Amazonas (Idesam), Instituto Arapyaú, initiative ‘Uma Concertação pela Amazônia’, Impact Hub Manaus and Coca-Cola Brasil.

“We divided the book into four chapters, where we report the relationship between Manaus and the forest, showing how they come together. Our goal is to highlight this relationship that has existed for years, reinforcing the participation of the population in discussions about climate and sustainability,” explains Sérgio Adeodato.

In the work, the author also presents data such as the existence of 30 thousand indigenous people in the capital, most of them in low-income areas. In total, there are 50 urban agglomerations without basic public services, with social challenges in the face of the city’s disorderly expansion. According to MapBiomas, the urban area doubled in size in 35 years in the city, whose territory is 80% forested. As for the relationship with the green, the book reveals new research indicating that 72.6% of Manauaras believe that a conserved Amazon increases the quality of life of the population.

The narrative is interspersed with photographic images produced by André Pessoa and Bruno Kelly, photojournalists, the latter with a special photo essay on the work’s theme.

To give voice to the urban collectives, the project ‘Manaus de Frente para a Floresta’ also held workshops for the creation of a podcast with children and teenagers from the Monte das Oliveiras neighborhood, in the North Zone of Manaus. The product, called ‘I am from Monte’, contains six episodes produced by 15 children and teenagers from the collective ‘Soul do Monte’, with stories from the periphery, and will also be released this Tuesday,17.
