MANAUS – The “Faria Siblings“, as Nathália and Carlos Faria are known, secured a spot in the kumitê and kata categories by team and individual in the Brazilian National Karate Team for this year. The athletes from the state of Amazonas participated in the entity’s national selection, held this weekend in Caucaia, in Ceará, and will defend the state and the country in the South American championship this year, which takes place between April 18 and 24, in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Nathália has been in the National Team for six years and was champion in two individual categories under-21 female (-61kg): the first is in kata, characterized by the simulation of combat movements, performed in teams or individually; and the second in kumitê, which is the moment when the opponents fight each other and demonstrate attack and defense techniques.

“This competition was my second participation in an under-21 category. I was very happy with my result and I could feel my evolution from the last competition I participated in last year to this one, the national selective. I hope more and more to be able to bring better results. What is most rewarding is this feeling of accomplishment, because I was able to enter the selection both in kata and kumitê,” said Nathália Faria.

To CENARIUM MAGAZINE, Nathália Faria pointed out that she will continue focusing on the sport and on training to defend Brazil in Guayaquil. At 18 years old, the athlete is a black belt and highlight in Karate, a sport she has been practicing for more than 11 years and where she has achieved some important achievements: she is a three-time Brazilian champion, twice by kumitê and once by kata, champion by the International Open Karate Arnold Classic, 5th place in the Karate World Cup in Hungary in 2019, and 12-time Amazon champion of Karate.

“We have to continue the work, because it won’t be easy either. I really hope I can represent my country in the best way possible in Guayaquil. I really want to bring the two medals in kata and kumitê, which would be my first international WKF [World Karate Federation] medals. I will certainly give my best”, Nathália Faria emphasized.

Multi-champion

At only 16 years old, Carlos Faria has been in the Brazilian National Karate Team for four years and is a multi-champion in the sport: Pan-American champion in the kumitê category and vice-champion in kata, both in 2019, two-time champion at the Arnold Classic, six-time Brazilian champion and 11-time Amazon karate champion. Alongside his sister, the young man is one of the promising karate fighters of Amazonas and the country.

To CENARIUM MAGAZINE, Carlos talked about the places he secured and his expectations to participate in the South American Championship in Guayaquil and international championships. In the national selective for the Brazilian Karate National Team 2022, the athlete conquered vacancies in three categories: team kata, individual kata, and kumitê, obtaining 100% of success.

“I competed in three different categories and, thank God, I became champion in all of them. I leave with the feeling of accomplishment and a huge expectation for the South American championship, as well as to participate in international championships, but I know there are some points to be corrected. I hope I can bring a great result for Amazonas”, he declared.
