MANAUS – A committee of deputies and senators landed on Wednesday, 11, in Boa Vista (RR), to investigate the complaints against the activities of miners in the Yanomami indigenous lands. The action is led by the Human Rights Commission of the Federal Senate and counts with the participation of the Federal Deputies, from Amazonas, Marcelo Ramos (PSD) and José Ricardo (PT).

After numerous reports of arbitrary actions of miners against indigenous people, who work in Yanomami Indigenous Lands, a committee of the National Congress went to the field to verify, in person, in Roraima, the reports of violence against the Yanomami people and hold hearings with state and federal public entities to resolve the demands of the original people.

“Whatever is the responsibility of the federal government that is not being fulfilled, in the sense of what the Federal Constitution and the law determines, both from the point of view of the preservation of the Indigenous Lands as well as the guarantee of the safety of the indigenous people, we will demand that measures be taken,” declared the president of the Senate Human Rights Commission, Senator Humberto Costa (PT).

Humberto also said that logistical support was requested from the federal government to carry out the work in Roraima, but that so far there had been no response. “We made the request via the president of the Senate (Rodrigo Pacheco) and had no response. We also made a request directly to federal government agencies and we also didn’t get a response. It is bad, but in any case we will be able to gather the information needed to carry out this work.

Indigenous leaders are favorable to and confident in the work being carried out by the senators and deputies in investigating the accusations against the miners, as told by the president of the District Council for Indigenous Health Yanomami and Yek’wana (Condisi-YY), Júnior Hekurari Yanomami.

“It is very important for the Senate Human Rights Commission to listen to us, the indigenous leaders and organizations. The Yanomami Indigenous Land has been invaded by miners, there are 25,000 miners in the Yanomami Indigenous Land threatening us, the Yanomami Indians. This year, we celebrate 30 years of Yanomami Indigenous Land, and what are we going to celebrate?
