Federal Road Police officer is injured in confrontation with protesters on highway in Pará

MANAUS – An agent of the Federal Road Police (PRF) was injured after a confrontation with protesters in the municipality of Novo Progresso, in the southwest of Pará. Besides the officer, a child was also injured during the confrontation. According to an official note from the PRF, both the officer and the child suffered minor injuries and have been released after medical attention. The conflict occurred during the intervention of state security forces that were called to free part of the BR-163 highway, occupied by protesters in anti-democratic acts.

As soon as they arrived at the site, the PRF agents were received with curses and slogans. The tone increased and the protesters began to attack the vehicles with sticks, stones, firecrackers, gun shots and other objects thrown at the officers. The PRF team retaliated with warning shots. The violent outcome was accompanied by euphoria on the part of the extremists who celebrated the confrontation. At one point, one of them even recorded images of the conflict on his cell phone.

The images of the battle between protesters and police took over the Internet and may serve as fuel for other occupations in various regions of the country to become more violent. In an interview with CNN Brazil, PRF communications director Cristiano Vasconcellos talked about the Institution’s next acts in BR, the networks supporting the protesters, and the number of agents injured in the conflict. “We were shot at and had to retreat, but we are organizing ourselves to unblock the highway”, he said.

“We had three vehicles shot at and a colleague was wounded, but he is fine. About the structure of the camp he commented. “Our intelligence has already done a survey of the leaders and we are already contacting the Federal Police and the Federal Prosecutor’s Office to take action for precautionary arrests”, said Cristiano. About confrontations in other regions, Vasconcellos commented. “We had this reaction in Pará and in Rio do Sul, Santa Catarina, where we had two colleagues injured and one demonstrator arrested”, concluded the federal agent.
