‘He loves Brazil and dedicated his career to covering the Amazon rainforest’, says brother-in-law of missing journalist

MANAUS – The family of the British journalist and contributor of The Guardian newspaper, Dom Phillips, who is missing in Vale do Javari, in the countryside of Amazonas state, has commented on social networks about his relationship with the Amazon Rainforest. In a post on Twitter, his brother-in-law Paul Sherwood said that Phillips loves Brazil.

In the publication, the brother-in-law makes an appeal for Brazilian authorities to find Phillips as soon as possible. For Paul Sherwood, time is of the essence right now. “He loves Brazil and has dedicated his career to covering the Amazon Rainforest. We understand that time is essential, so please find our Dom as soon as possible,” Paul Sherwood wrote on Twitter.

In the same post, Sherwood pleads for the National Guard, the Federal Police and all powers to be sent out to search for Phillips. “My partner Sian’s brother, Dom Phillips, disappeared on a trip in the Amazon. We implore the Brazilian authorities to send the National Guard, Federal Police and all powers at their disposal to find our beloved Dom,” he begged.

Worrying

Friends and colleagues of journalist Dom Phillips at The Guardian have taken to social networks to talk about his disappearance. In a post, on social media, Tom Phillips, also a correspondent for the British newspaper, highlighted the threats suffered by Dom and said that the scenario is extremely worrying.

“My friend and colleague @domphillips disappeared during a report in the Brazilian Amazon with a leading indigenous expert, Bruno Pereira, just days after receiving threats. Extraordinarily worrying. Please share as widely as possible,” the colleague wrote on Twitter.

In addition to Tom Phillips, the newspaper’s environment editor, Jonathan Watts, made an appeal on social media for Brazilian authorities to urgently launch a search operation for the English correspondent and the indigenist.

“Don Phillips, an excellent journalist, regular contributor to the @guardian, and great friend, is missing in the Javari Valley in the Amazon, following death threats to his fellow indigenist Bruno Pereira, who is also missing. Appealing to the Brazilian authorities to urgently launch the search operation,” he posted on Twitter.

Who was Dom Phillips?

A veteran of international journalism, Phillips was born in the Merseyside region of Liverpool in the northwest of England. Throughout his career as a journalist, Phillips has worked for outlets including the Financial Times, New York Times, Washington Post, Bloomberg, Daily Beast, soccer magazine Four Four Two and energy newspaper Platts, among others.

In 2007, the journalist moved to Brazil. According to The Guardian newspaper, Dom Phillips is working on a book about the environment, with the support of the Alicia Patterson Foundation.
