In Acre, the municipality of Feijó has the highest rate of burning and deforestation in the region, says research

MANAUS – Until October 14 this year, Acre accumulated a total of 461.22km² of deforestation warnings detected by the Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (Deter). The data are from Terra Brasilis, a platform of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), in which they point out that the municipality of Feijó is the place with the highest rate of burning and deforestation in the state, reaching even 88.10km² of deforestation warnings.

The study reveals that Feijó shows a worsening in the statistics related to deforestation in the last two years. According to Terra Brasilis, the analyses up to October of the years 2020 and 2021, the increases followed the respective sequences: 64.50km² and 71.89km². If compared to 2022, there is a difference of a little more than 23km².

The municipality located in the central region of Acre, which until the year 2020 had an average of 34,884 inhabitants, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), also has a little more than 21% of the hot spots registered in the whole of Acre, according to the Burning Program of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

Deforestation in Acre

In June this year, another survey carried out by the Institute for Man and Environment in the Amazon (Imazon) indicated that, in the month of May alone, 40 kilometers of forest were devastated in the state, resulting in an increase of a little more than 15% in relation to the deforestation in the region in the month of April, when the total destruction reached 11 square kilometers.

The data showed that of the total 1,476 kilometers of the area deforested in the Legal Amazon in May, 3% was in the State of Acre. From August 2021, to the month of May this year, Acre reached 480 square kilometers of deforestation, 9% less than the period from August 2020 to May 2021, when the region reached 528 square kilometers of devastation.

Imazon also revealed that degradation in the state had a significant increase in the month of July this year. An increase of 5,000%, going from 1km² to 51km². In August, Imazon also published that, in the last 12 months, 36% of the deforestation occurred in the area known as “Amacro (Amazonas, Acre and Rondônia).
