BRASÍLIA – Art and music invaded the capital of Brazil this Wednesday afternoon. The Esplanade of the Ministries was crowded and inside the National Congress, the singer and organizer of the “Stand for the Earth”, Caetano Veloso, transformed the Black Hall into a stage. Besides the arguments, which received the support of several activists, the song “Terra” helped to reinforce the discourse.

Artists like Nando Reis, Letícia Sabatella, Maria Gadú, Christiane Torloni, Daniela Mercury, Seu Jorge, Lázaro Ramos, Natiruts, Bela Gil and Cissa Guimarães arrived in Brasília to participate in the act so that projects that change Brazilian legislation, and are feared by environmentalists, are not approved.

“A series of bills can make this situation even more serious if approved. They could facilitate deforestation and mining of indigenous lands and unprotect the forest against land grabbing and criminals”, said singer Caetano Veloso.

The ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) stopped their routine trials to listen to the caravan. The meeting of about twenty minutes took place in the office of Justice Cármen Lúcia and was attended by Justices Alexandre de Moraes, Luís Roberto Barroso and Rosa Weber. The head of the Senate, Ricardo Pacheco, was also present and received a letter.

Just as the sun was saying goodbye to the candango sky, Caetano Veloso climbed on the sound car parked in front of the Congress and drove thousands of demonstrators to delirium. The demonstration brought the musical spice from several parts of Brazil.

For more than two hours, the public followed everything with glazed eyes, attentive ears, and in a way that had not happened for a long time: with the energy of the present. Even though the use of masks is not mandatory in open places, almost all the demonstrators wore the protection

Death Combo

The combo, called the “destruction package”, deals with measures that could have irreversible impacts on the Amazon, the climate, security, and human rights. The bill flexibilizes the entry of agrochemicals, deforestation and mining in indigenous lands.
