After the historic flood of the Rio Negro, which reached the mark of 30.02 meters on June 16 this year, the river rose again another nine centimeters on Tuesday, 7, and reached 21.51 meters, according to the monitoring service of the Port of Manaus. With this, the level is already higher than that recorded in the same period in 2020, when the quota was at 18.18 meters.

The data also points out that, in 31 days, the river rose more than two meters. Despite the rise, the Geological Survey of Brazil (CPRM) has not issued emergency alerts. According to the city’s Civil Defense, the construction of bridges in risk areas should only start after the alerts, expected for January and February 2022, when the quota should reach 27 meters.

For Maria Simões, 65, resident of the São Jorge neighborhood, West Zone of Manaus, the flood period is one of the most worrying since the family lives in an area that floods as soon as the emergency quota is reached. “The bridges can ease the situation, but they don’t solve or recover the damage”, says the housewife who had to build a second floor to live with her family during the flood period.

In 2021, in the metropolitan region of Manaus alone, 17,000 families were affected by the rising waters. Furthermore, sectors such as commerce and public transportation were the most affected by the flood.
