MANAUS (AM) – A solidarity movement promoted by friends and family to save the sight of amazonian journalist Walcira Maia spread in message groups and social networks, on Tuesday afternoon, 10, in the capital of Amazonas. Walcira needs to have reparative surgery on her eyes and the professional specialist in retina and cataract care in Curitiba, Paraná. For travel expenses, exams, medicines among other expenses, the sister of the communicator created a “little contribution” online, in Vakinha site, but so far only R $ 1,8 thousand of R $ 10 thousand estimated spending.

With more than a decade of performance in the Amazonian communication, the journalist was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy, a complication acquired along with the disease. “After the loss of her son, which happened right after she gave birth, in 1996, she discovered she had diabetes mellitus,” says Walmira Pereira, the journalist’s sister, in the text of the online campaign. She also says that no matter how well her sister had followed the treatments, even the very difficult ones, the loss of her vision was inevitable.

“Despite long treatment with eye injections, lasers, and strict dietary controls, other problems began to appear, such as cataracts in both eyes and glaucoma. With the pandemic everything was aggravated, leading to almost a total loss of vision. She can hardly see from one eye, and in the other, her vision is already quite compromised,” explains Walmira.

The campaign created by the family wants to give Walcira back a little quality of life. “We have hope that she will see again,” says her sister.

“Walcira is a journalist and has always been a person with a beautiful smile and loved to photograph. Detailed and very perfectionist, she always wanted to take the best pictures and capture the expressions in the clicks that eternalize moments. Our sister will be victorious,” says Walmira.

The CENARIUM reportage contacted the president of the Union of Professional Journalists of Amazonas (SJPAM), Wilson Reis, who said that the entity will help the journalist, but did not give details about how this help will be.
