MANAUS – The aggression of the now former coach of Desportiva Ferroviária-ES against the assistant lineswoman Marcielly Netto in the middle of the soccer field on Sunday, 10, has reverberated in the press and social networks, causing outrage and calls for justice both in Brazil and abroad. On Instagram, the club announced Soriano’s dismissal.

The “header” occurred at the end of the first half of the match against Nova Venécia, in the Capixaba State Championship. Unhappy with the end of the game before his team took a corner kick, he entered the field to complain to the referee and, after arguing with referee Arthur Gomes Rabelo, Soriano hit Marcielly in the face with a headbutt and was expelled by the referee.

In the networks, Mídia Ninja, 342artes, and Esporte pela Democracia headed the campaign #JusticeaporMarcielly. “This cannot go unpunished! All our support for Marcielly and all the women in the field!” they said.

Manifestations

On the microblog Twitter, activists like Fábio Félix, district lawmaker for PSOL and LGBTQI+ activist, said that the aggression against the lineswoman is unacceptable. “Dismissal is too little, this coach has to answer for gender violence. Enough of sexism in soccer! Our solidarity to the flag-woman,” he reinforced.

Actress Dira Paes said that Rafael Soriano’s act was a “cowardice” that cannot go unpunished. “The coach Rafael Soriano, of Desportiva, assaulted the assistant referee Marcielly Netto with a headbutt on the field. She will press charges. All our support to Marcielly and all the women on the field!”, he also added.

The state lawmaker and vice leader of the PSOL in the Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro (Alerj), Mônica Francisco, reinforced the repudiation to the violence of the former coach. “The team fired him, less bad. Solidarity to Marcielly”, she also said.

Threat

After the scene, the technician still made threats to Marcielly. “If you say that I assaulted you, we will go to the police. We are going to do a physical examination. If not, I will sue you, I will sue you. She is saying that I assaulted you. That’s a lie. She is using herself because she is a woman. She is taking advantage of a situation because she is a woman,” he said.

According to Globo Esporte, Rafael Soriano is preventively suspended by the Sports Justice Court of Espírito Santo for 30 days. The request was made by the Attorney General’s Office and was granted late this Sunday night, 10.
