MANAUS – The Minister of Justice and Public Safety, Anderson Torres, did not attend the joint meeting of the Commission on Human Rights (CDH) and the Temporary Commission on Crime in the North Region (CTENORTE) created to monitor, “in loco”, investigations into the causes of increased crime and attacks in the North Region, scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, 22. The hearing was postponed, with no date set.

As AMAZON AGENCY reported on Monday, 20, Torres and representatives of the Union of Indigenous Peoples of Javari Valley (Univaja) were invited to give more information about the violence in the region where Bruno da Cunha Araújo Pereira and Dominic Mark Phillips, also known as “Dom Phillips”, were killed. No reasons were given for the minister’s non-attendance, but the parliamentary advisory board stated that he is “available to receive the members of the commission”.

In the session in which Univaja was heard, the legal advisor of the indigenous organization, Eliesio Marubo, reiterated the request for protection of the coordinators. Marubo pointed out that the care with the protection has been redoubled, even though the security forces installed in the Javari Valley during the search for the journalist and the indigenous person have left the region.

“We are taking due care. There is no one else there. As I said at various times, after they [Dom Phillips and Bruno Araújo] were found, it would return to normality and normality is this state of insecurity”, he said.

In addition to the request sent to the Federal Police (PF) requesting protection for the coordinators Eliesio Marubo, Paulo Marubo and Beto Marubo, as well as the vigilantes of the Univaja Surveillance Team (EVU) and the Front for Ethnoenvironmental Protection, another document will be sent later on Wednesday reiterating the request.

Trip to Vale do Javari

The expectation of the commission is to organize a trip to Vale do Javari next week for the members of the two Senate commissions, as well as the members of the temporary commission created in the House of Representatives. The intention is to hear those involved in the investigation, such as the superintendent of the Federal Police in Amazonas, Eduardo Alexandre Fontes, the prisoners Amarildo da Costa Oliveira, known as “Pelado”, Oseney da Costa Oliveira, “Dos Santos”, and Jeferson da Silva Lima, “Pelado da Dinha”.

The goal of still hearing the Minister of Justice and the president of Funai, Marcelo Xavier, is not discarded. “We have to go to the trial, find out how the investigation is going, hear the Federal Police, if this is the case, and hear the prisoners, if there is no judicial impediment. After that, we will hear the Minister of Justice and the president of Funai”, explained the president of CTENORTE, Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP).
