MANAUS – Surrounded by mountains, the State of Roraima has Boa Vista as its capital, on the margin of the Branco river, and concentrates a great number of touristics spots such as Serra Grande, the Municipal Theater, besides the famous tourist attraction Serra do Tepequém. CENARIUM compiled some tourist places that are worth visiting in the state.

With its mountain ranges and mountains, Roraima receives tourists from all over the world. The first tourist destination is located in the extreme north of the state and forms the triple border between Brazil, Venezuela and Guyana. Mount Roraima is more than 2,800 meters high and the plateau – the form of relief consisting of a raised surface – is a unique place.

Opened by the indigenous Pemon people, the attraction is considered by them to be sacred ground and a spiritual symbol. The trails in the area take up to six days of walking. Helicopter trips are also an option for those who wish to reach the place.

Serra do Tepequém

In the municipality of Amajarí, in the north of Roraima, the Serra do Tepequém was considered the most sought-after destination by local and Brazilian tourists in 2020, according to the State Department of Tourism (Detur). The site is 210 kilometers from the capital, Boa Vista, and has the same geological formation as Mount Roraima. The plateau reaches a height of 1,022 meters.

The site includes the villages of Paiva and Cabo Sobral, whose landscape has been modified over time by gold mining and the workers of this activity who came to the site in search of diamonds at various points of the mountain, causing changes in the rock formations. Mining was forbidden in the region in 1989.

Municipal Theater of Boa Vista

Located in the southern part of the capital of Roraima, the Municipal Theater of Boa Vista was inaugurated in 2017 with the capacity to receive up to 1,100 people and structure prepared for musical performances, dance and theater. In total, there are 620 m² of stage alone and 500 parking spaces. The mayor of the city, at the time, stated that the project cost approximately R$57.7 million and had its construction started in 2010.

“It is one of the largest theaters in Brazil and, as of today, we are able to host any kind of show, both large and small,” said the mayor Teresa Surita. The enterprise is managed by the Foundation for Education, Tourism, Sports and Culture (Fetec), which has its headquarters in one of the floors of the building.

Serra Grande

The tourist spot is also one of the main attractions for nature lovers and is an option for those looking for a different place to spend their vacation or a long vacation. Serra Grande is located in the municipality of Cantá, 38 km from Boa Vista. Tourists who want to go there need to drive 30 kilometers to get to the foot of the mountain and from there start the hike. The route is along BR 401, RR 206 and the side road to the Branco River.

It is 850 meters high, but tourists can only set up camp above the main waterfall, located 500 meters from the foot of the mountain, for safety reasons. The visitor who decides to explore the attraction further needs to be accompanied by an experienced guide. In addition, the use of appropriate backpacks, a camping tent, sunscreen, and resistant footwear, among other items, is recommended.

Rio Branco Park

Opened in 2020, the tourist complex Rio Branco Park is also a social work. It was built on the banks of the Rio Branco, which borders the State of Roraima, and is located in the Francisco Caetano Filho neighborhood, an area that suffered annually from flooding caused by heavy rains, the intense flow of drug traffic, and prostitution. When the construction work started, more than 350 vulnerable families who lived in the area were compensated.

The Rio Branco Park also has sports courts, sidewalks for hiking, two artistic murals, one with 34 paintings by regional artists, and another painted by internationally renowned artist Eduardo Kobra.
