MANAUS – The legal advisor of the Union of Indigenous Peoples of Vale do Javari (Univaja), Yura Ni-Nawavo Marubo, criticized the slowness of the public authorities, especially the federal government, with decisions that, according to him, should have already been taken. The representative criticized the Lula government for not appointing heads of agencies for the indigenous agenda in the region. The criticism was made during an interview on the program “Good Night, Amazon”, presented by journalists Paula Litaiff and Alvaro Corado, on radio and TV Onda Digital.

The questioning was provoked from the visit of the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Rosa Weber, who arrived in Tabatinga (distant 1,110 kilometers from Manaus) on Monday, 20: “We expected a heavy action, a concrete action from the federal government, after the tragedy of Bruno and Dom, but, in practice, even though there were visits from the Legislative, Executive and Judiciary powers, however, nothing happened. They did not appoint the head of Funai, nor the head of the Dsei of Atalaia do Norte”, he criticized.

“These are bureaucratic issues, decisions that have not been made, that are putting the brakes on, that culminate in delays in the inspection processes and in the basic health care of the indigenous peoples. In practice, in reality, they are only visits,” he said. “In practice, what we want are the inspections, according to what was passed on to these same institutions. Today, what we have are our leaders, among them, Beto Marubo, with three policemen of the national force 24 hours a day. Nobody can stand living like this”, he lamented.

Political Fingers

Asked by host Paula Litaiff about the reason for these non-appointments, Yura Ni-Nawavo commented: “It’s a political issue. There are fingers of politicians of the State of Amazonas that are interfering. We are arriving in the month of April and there is no concrete appointment in that region”, he said. About the visit of the minister Rosa Weber, Yura commented: “The presence of the minister calls attention to the issue of human rights in prisons, and the other is the issue of security of indigenous peoples. but, in my view, nothing will happen at all”, he said.

Yura Marubo also called attention to the legal needs involving situations provoked in Javari Valley. Many of them are violent and need the presence of a Judiciary structured to respond to the demands in the region. “What is needed is public competitive examinations for the judiciary, and judicial technicians; what we expect are permanent judges, but, in the short term, absolutely nothing can happen”, he evaluated.

Ministry of Peoples

Yura made an analysis about the creation of the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples and the management of Sonia Guajajara. “The posture of our relatives who are in power causes us strangeness. I do not believe that there is ill will, but they block the appointments on political [party] issues and the Javari Valley is going to the fourth month without any appointment, even with the indigenous peoples occupying the Sesai to demand the appointment of the one who was chosen by the indigenous leaderships, which is Kurá Kanamari and, until now, they have not given an answer”, he denounced.

“The Javari Valley needs speed and this is bothersome because we go to public bodies to speed up actions or requests by the traditional leaders and we are faced with a lot of obstacles, bureaucracy, processes, regulations, and these leaders (indigenous people) don’t know what bureaucracy is, they want speed and we, in the urban centers, end up being discredited. It is not possible to take two years to acquire a boat, and these solutions arrive close to the elections…”, he observed, “The occupations (of headquarters) will happen, whether the government is on the left or on the right”, Yura Marubo said.
