MANAUS – Parauapebas and Canaã dos Carajás, in Pará, are among the cities that most gained participation in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country in 2020, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In the municipalities, located in the interior of the State, the advance was driven by the iron ore extraction activity.

Parauapebas gained 0.5% and Canaã dos Carajás, 0.3%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points. Besides these cities, Manaus, in the State of Amazonas, also makes up the “top 5” of the national ranking, with an increase of 1.2%. Saquarema, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, with a gain of 0.2%, and Itajaí, in Santa Catarina, of 0.4%, appear at the top of the list.

According to the institute, the explanation for the prominence of the municipalities is the activity of greatest influence in the localities. In the pandemic, cities with a predominance of the service sector, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, for example, had the largest drops in participation in Brazil’s GDP between 2019 and 2020.

“The 2020 results highlight that the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on municipal economies varied according to the importance of their service activities, especially face-to-face ones. This is because these services aggregate the activities with the largest declines in participation in the country between 2019 and 2020, being the most affected by the measures of social isolation and fall in demand during the year”, explains IBGE’s Regional Accounts analyst, Luiz Antonio de Sá.

In reference to the predominant activities, in Manaus, it is the transformation industry, with the Manaus Industrial Pole (PIM), in Saquarema, the extraction of oil and gas, and in Itajaí, the trade and repair of motor vehicles and bicycles.

Manaus in the ranking

The capital of Amazonas is also on the list of municipalities that together accounted for almost 25% of the national GDP: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Manaus, Curitiba, Osasco, Porto Alegre and Guarulhos.

“Manaus, which also followed the downward trend in service activity observed in other capitals, had its result softened by manufacturing industries, especially the manufacture of computer equipment, concentrated in the municipality”, clarifies de Sá.

The city is still in the “top 10” of the ranking of cities with greater participation in the GDP, with R$ 91,768,773, only behind São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and Belo Horizonte.

Loss of Participation

The five municipalities with the greatest falls in participation during the period under review were São Paulo (9.8%), with a loss of 0.5 percentage point; Rio de Janeiro (4.4%), 0.4 percentage point; Brasília (3.5%), 0.2 percentage point; Curitiba (1.2%), 0.1 percentage point; and São José dos Pinhais (0.3%), with a fall of 0.1 percentage point. The five municipalities accounted for almost 20% of the country’s total GDP in the year.
