MANAUS – The misery that reaches Pará is the fourth largest in Brazil, according to a survey released by the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). According to the survey, the Regional Misery Index in the State is 70.6% and is above the Brazilian average (65.3%) – the closer to 100 the worse the situation is. Besides this, 32.6% of the population has given up looking for a job or is unemployed in the region.

For economist Denise Kassama, vice president of the Federal Council of Economics (Cofecon), the country was already experiencing an economic crisis since 2013 and 2014, and the Covid-19 pandemic only accentuated a situation that was already critical. The survey does not mention Amazonas, but the specialist highlights that Pará faces similar problems to the state.

“Pará has similar problems to Amazonas, to a slightly lesser degree. Long distances that make logistics more expensive. The difference is that they have more roads. The income was already bad before the pandemic and it got worse”, pointed out Denise Kassama.

According to the indicator per region, calculated by UFRJ, Bahia leads among the Brazilian states analyzed, with a misery index of 89.9%, followed by the also northeasterns Pernambuco (83%) and Ceará (81.9%) and by Pará (70.6%), from the North. The Brazilian average, at 65.3%, is the highest in the historical series that began in 2012.

Unemployment

According to the study, the underutilization rate (unemployed, those who have given up looking for a job, those who work less than they would like), in Bahia, is the highest among Brazilian states, with 42.1%. The Northeast region also comes out ahead with Pernambuco (36%), followed by Ceará (35.8%), and, in the North, by Pará (32.6%). In the Southeast, Rio de Janeiro (25.5%) leads. The country’s average is 27.2%.

As for the per capita household income of the poorest 20% (in R$), the difference between the States in the Northeast and the North, which have results worse than the Brazilian average, to those in the South and Southeast and the Federal District, which has a better average, calls our attention.

In the Northeast, Pernambuco is once again in the lead, both regionally and nationally. According to the UFRJ survey, the average income of this population, in the state, is R$90 per month, while in Bahia, it is R$102.50, and in the North Region, in Pará, it is R$121. The average for Brazil is higher, at R$ 187.50 in 2021.

In the South, Rio Grande do Sul leads in the national territory, in per capital domiciliary income, of the 20% poorest, with income of R$ 377,50, according to the survey. Paraná, also in the South, has an income of R$ 317,50 next to the Federal District, in the Midwest, the same value.
