VILHENA (RO) – Two suspected cases of Monkeypox were discarded in Rondônia. The negative tests confirmed that the patients monitored by the State Health Surveillance Agency (Agevisa) do not have the disease that has already affected at least three Brazilians, according to the Ministry of Health (MS).

Even with the cases ruled out, the state government issued an alert to the municipal health managers. The goal is that managers remain alert and provide agility in surveillance, testing, and investigation of suspected contamination.

Patients with suspicions ruled out are from Rio Crespo, a municipality in the interior of Rondonia, with 3.7 thousand inhabitants (Reproduction/Agevisa RO)

Cases under investigation

The two patients, who have been monitored so far, with suspected cases of the disease are married and live from agriculture, in the city of Rio Crespo, in the countryside of the state, with a population of less than 4 thousand inhabitants and almost 200 kilometers away from Porto Velho. They did not have their names released, but, according to Agevisa and the State Health Department of Rondônia (Sesau-RO), the man is 32 years old and the woman is 25 years old.

Agevisa informed that the investigated cases were removed from the Ministry of Health’s list of notified cases still on Sunday, 12, but were only confirmed as negative, after laboratory tests, by the government of Rondonia, this past Monday, 13.

However, it was not informed whether the patients had recent contact with someone infected or if they had returned from a trip, since the Monkeypox outbreak originated in the UK last month.

Alerts in Rondônia

Although there are no confirmed cases in Rondônia, the state government has issued an epidemiological alert, “with all epidemiological surveillance [state, regional, and municipal] being alert for the detection, notification, and immediate investigation of any suspected cases”, Agevisa reported.

The government also published a technical note with information and guidelines about the disease aimed at the population and the spheres of Public Health.

Monkeypox

Symptoms of the disease include sores on the skin, fever and chills, muscle aches, physical exhaustion, headache, and inflamed lymph nodes. Transmission of the virus that causes the disease occurs through direct contact with the skin of an infected person or by sharing objects, such as clothes or sheets.

Nationwide, three patients who returned from a trip to Europe are in isolation, diagnosed with monkey pox: two in São Paulo and another in Rio Grande do Sul.
