MANAUS – Defending the causes of women, young people, indigenous communities, quilombolas, LGBTQIAP+ groups and riverine populations is in the electoral plan of the only indigenous candidate for the Government of Amazonas, Dr. Israel Tuyuka (PSOL). In a 10-page plan, he says that his candidacy is based on the representation of all the causes of the minority and working class.

Born in São Gabriel da Cachoeira, Israel is a member of the Tuyuka ethnic group, and intends to ensure the arrival of medical care to the communities, as well as dreaming of creating Indigenous University Centers.

Eradicating illiteracy

In education, Dr. Israel Tuyuka has, in his government plan, the combat and eradication of illiteracy in all urban and rural communities, as well as the strengthening and expansion of the Permanence Scholarship Program for students from indigenous, quilombola, and traditional populations in the capital and countryside.

Employment and income generation

In the scope of employment and income generation, it points to the development of the regional potentialities of the productions, such as rural, agroecological, extractive, and handcrafted products from the communities and cooperatives from the Amazonas State’s interior. In relation to the environment, one of the doctor’s actions is to monitor the reforestation of degraded areas, besides encouraging the construction of new ports in the inland cities. At the higher level, he intends to inaugurate Indigenous University Centers.

Social Assistance, Human Rights, Civil Defense and Citizenship

In relation to social assistance, the eradication of the civil sub-registration – the set of births that are not registered in the year of birth – of rural indigenous, riverine and quilombola populations and communities is one of the candidate’s objectives. The governmental aids will also be reviewed and readjusted, by him, according to the value of the basic income consistent with the needs of Amazonian families.

Security

As for public security, the candidate is willing to reformulate the public security and social defense policies in line with the principles of citizenship and community police. This is the second time that the doctor is running for office. In 2004, he ran for vice-mayor of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, for the Workers’ Party (PT). In these elections, the doctor is running for the federation that brings together the PSOL and Rede Sustentabilidade, and is the only indigenous candidate running in the October elections.
