BOA VISTA – The winners of the Oscar, world cinema’s biggest award, will receive statuettes of the deity Omama, of the Yanomami, as a way to raise awareness against the illegal exploitation of gold in indigenous lands. The announcement was made by Urihi Associação Yanomami, this Friday, 10, in a video entitled “The cost of gold”. The action was created by the agency DM9, and features Junior Hekurari Yanomami, leader of the organization.

The award ceremony takes place this Sunday, the 12th. The action makes reference to the humanitarian crisis faced by the Yanomami indigenous people, who suffer from the invasion of miners who explore the extraction of gold in their territory.

The traditional award statuette is made of solid bronze and covered in 24 karat gold. The object of the Omama deity will not replace the statuette, but will serve as a symbol of reflection on the indigenous crisis. For the Yanomami, Omama is the creator and warrior of the Amazon, and symbolizes protection. In the video, Junior Yanomami asks that the nominated artists use the visibility and projection of the award to help combat environmental degradation.

“Congratulations on your nomination. One of the greatest symbols of success may soon be in your hands, the Oscar. However, your symbol of success comes at a much greater price to our people. So here I offer a different statuette, that of our hero. Omama is the creator and warrior of the Amazon and the Yanomami people”, said Junior Yanomami.

“The place you occupy now is one of power. Power to start a change and rethink the high value we place on this metal. To rethink the cost of it to millions of lives, our lives and your representation of success. Your talent is what made you shine,” Hekurari further said in the video. “Omama is with you as you help in the fight against illegal gold, the death of our land and our people.”

In the video, performers Angela Bassett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kerry Condon, Stephanie Hsu, Hong Chau, Brendan Gleeson, Judd Hirsch, Brian Tyree Henry, Barry Keoghan, Ke Huy Quan, Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, Austin Butler, Bill Nighy, Paul Mescal, Andrea Riseborough, Cate Blanchett, Michelle Willias, Ana de Armas, and Michelle Yeoh are mentioned.

Fight against mining

The Federal Police (PF) has already launched two operations focused on the criminal organization that would coordinate a money laundering scheme resulting from the illicit gold trade. The sister and nephew of the governor of Roraima, Antonio Denarium (PP), were among the targets.

A Folha de São Paulo newspaper report showed that gold mined illegally is legalized in the financial system by a small group of institutions, according to surveys and investigations into the illegal trade of the precious metal in Brazil.

The suspicions fall on five Distribuidoras de Títulos e Valores Mobiliários (DTVMs), a type of financial institution that can specialize in buying and selling financial gold and operates with authorization from the Central Bank (BC).

Oscar 2023

The 95th Academy Awards will be held this Sunday, 12, at 9 pm (EST) at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California, USA. This year, the awards will not be shown on broadcast TV. The live broadcast will be carried out by TNT and HBO Max, starting at 8 pm.

Sensation of the awards season, “All in the same place at the same time”, by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, had the record number of nominations. The feature competes in 11 categories, followed by “Nothing New at the Front” and “The Banshees from Inisherin”, with nine nominations in total, including Best Picture.

The greater number of nominations has not made much difference in the recent history of the Oscars. In the last ten years, on only two occasions (with “The Shape of Water” in 2017 and “Birdman” in 2014) has the feature with the most nominations won the Best Picture Oscar. In 2022, “Attack of the Dogs” received 12 nominations and only took home one statuette.
