BRASILIA – Women over 60 years old who have children, but have not reached the contribution time for retirement, will be able to receive the benefit in the value of a minimum wage. This is the proposal of PL 2757/21, from federal lawmaker Talíria Petrone (PSOL/RJ), which intends to correct one of the countless distortions that harm women in the guarantee of access to social security.

The project amends Law no. 8213/1991, which regulates the Social Security Benefit Plans. Besides creating a retirement for maternal care, it also proposes the addition of the maternity leave period to the contribution time, a measure that corrects a significant loss in the working time count for women. Currently, those who have had two children at different times in their lives end up not counting one year of contribution.

“In a society that demands maternity from women, it is impressive how many rights are still denied to mothers. This project aims to correct historical distortions, contributing so that women who have become mothers are valued and have a guaranteed livelihood when they reach old age”, concludes the text of the proposal.

Argentinian Inspiration

PL 2757/2021 was inspired by the “Integral Program for Recognition of Time of Service for Assistance Tasks”, sanctioned by President Alberto Fernández last July. The law automatically benefited about 155,000 argentinian women, according to the National Social Security Administration (Anses).

Concentrated effort

The lawmaker’s office is promoting an effort to collect at least 257 signatures among parliamentarians for the approval of an urgency request.

“Our fight is for a fairer and more equal social division of labor, but until that happens, the least we can do is to guarantee retirement for women, especially black women, who have worked their whole lives without being paid for it”, said the congresswoman.
