MANAUS – In celebration of National Book Day, the Municipal Council of Culture (Concultura) will hold a literomusical soiree at the Museum of the City of Manaus (Muma), located at Dom Pedro 2 Square, historical center of the capital. The event will be held throughout the morning of Saturday, April 23, with free admission and capacity for an audience of 40 people.

The celebration, scheduled to start at 9am, will be divided in two moments. First, the poet and writer Zemaria Pinto, also accompanied by the writer, poet and president of Concultura, Tenório Telles, will conduct a lecture focused on honoring important figures in literature, such as José Saramago, Miguel de Cervantes, and William Shakespeare, who are also responsible for the origin of the ‘Book Day’, celebrated worldwide, and the centennial of the Modern Art Week in 2022.

Dedicated to literature, the president of Concultura points out the relevance of the date inserted in the world calendar by the General Conference of the United Nations for Education, Science and Culture (Unesco). For Tenório, books are one of the main instruments for the critical, social, political and anthropological development of society.

“It is a moment to reflect and promote dialogue with authors and works that have enriched our literary universe. It is a day of exchange and dialogue dedicated to two writers who helped forge western civilization: Shakespeare and Cervantes and, by extension, all creators of the word,” says Tenório Telles.

The program will also have the participation of the theater group from the Amazonas State University (UEA). The group will act out “The Tale of the Undiscovered Island”, by José Saramago. Followed by a lecture by theater director John Weiner about Saramago and his work.

Besides the lectures and skits, the agenda will also include musical performances and the showing of a video art with the poem by modernist poet Raul Bopp, “Cobra Norato”. “Celebrating the world book day is an act of reaffirmation of culture, knowledge, and reading. Books are sources of wisdom and information, and are fundamental in the process of forging the subjectivity of the human being”, Tenório considers.
