Manaus – During her speech at the 12th Annual Meeting of the Governors’ Climate and Forests Task Force (GCF Task Force), which took place on March 16-18 this year in Manaus, the Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation, Tatiana Schor, exposed the need for more diversity in academic environments and climate meetings.

Schor also highlighted the need to broaden the territorial governance mechanisms, especially when it comes to science, technology and innovation, and used the higher education institutions in the interior of Amazonas to highlight that it is necessary to improve the point of view and start understanding the higher education research policy as a territorial governance policy.

The five sectors that make up the discussion of society, in the various spheres of government were present. However, according to Tatiana, in this helix of the third sector, the grassroots population, indigenous people, quilombolas, and river dwellers were not represented as they should be, taking into consideration that they should not be part of the discussion only as consultees, but as an integral part that makes up the funding institutions from the beginning.

“So, in a table that we were structured, which is an all-male table, I was the only woman mediator. White men, many of the same age group, we miss the diversity of the zones, so, when we are doing politics, we always have to think about this diversity, and this is very important. Everything we do we have to do in the five-way helix”, says Tatiana.

Tatiana reiterates that the discussion was very good, but that, on these points, it left something to be desired, and hopes that this will serve as a warning so that when we are talking about territorial governance we can include all voices.

Women’s Policy

The secretary also points out that, currently, most of the students at the Amazonas State University (UEA) are women, and some are mothers, however, the institution does not have a policy for mothers at the university.

Even though they are the majority in the production of scientific articles, the diversity in debates of great importance is limited. Of the 364 thousand students enrolled by the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (Capes) 195 thousand are women.

This directly affects the number of female authors of scientific articles in the country, who are also a majority: 72% of the productions are by women, according to the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture.
