University of Amazonas State investigates complaint against professor suspected of organ trafficking

MANAUS – In a statement released on Thursday, 24, the Investigative Committee of the Amazonas State University (UEA) said it has initiated activities to investigate, within the institution, the complaint of administrative irregularity of the teacher of Anatomy discipline of the School of Health Sciences (ESA / UEA).

Professor Helder Bindá Pimenta was the target of a Federal Police operation for possible practice of the crime of international trafficking of human organs, held on Tuesday, 22. According to the investigations, the suspect sent plastinated human organs, a technical and modern procedure for the preservation of biological matter, which basically consists of extracting body fluids, replacing them with plastic resins.

The receiver of the organs would be the Indonesian fashion designer Arnold Putra, famous for attending fashion events with items made by him and collecting expensive cars. Among the items made by the man is a bag made of alligator tongues and the spine of a child, according to the Ukrainian website The Sun.

In the text, the rector of UEA, Cleinaldo de Almeida Costa, pointed out that the measure is to get answers from the institutional point of view. “The commission consists of two lawyers and two pathologists. They are qualified professionals to evaluate the case”, he reiterated.

The president of the Investigative Committee and professor at UEA, Patricia Fortes Attademo Ferreira, said that the entire process will run under the secrecy of the institution. “Today, we will make available the opening minutes of the investigation with the commission’s arrangements to begin hearings and taking depositions”, she explained.

The commission meeting was attended by the UEA’s rector, Cleinaldo de Almeida Costa, the UEA’s legal attorney, David Xavier, the commission’s members, Tiago Novaes Pinheiro (faculty member linked to the School of Health Sciences) and Antonio Eduardo Martinez Palhares (faculty member linked to the School of Health Sciences), and the commission’s secretary, Wandrey Cristiano de Jesus Vieira.

On Tuesday, 22, UEA decreed the precautionary removal for 30 days of the teacher of the subject of Anatomy, the School of Health Sciences (ESA / UEA). The removal occurred after the Federal Police (PF) of Amazonas perform an operation against international organ trafficking.
