Flood 2022: more than 40 municipalities declared an emergency situation in the AM; 410 thousand people have already been affected

MANAUS – The survey conducted by the Amazonas Civil Defense, through the Center for Monitoring and Alert (Cemoa), and the regional management, indicates that 41 municipalities in the state are in a situation of emergency because of the river flood, on Thursday, 26.

According to data available on the site of the Port of Manaus, the level of the Rio Negro reached the mark of 29.39 meters, 0.53 centimeters lower than the mark recorded in the same period in 2021, when the river reached 29.92 meters.

According to the report released by the Civil Defense, 17 other municipalities are in an alert situation and one in a state of attention. In the 41 municipalities in emergency situations, 410,944 people and 102,736 families have already been affected by this year’s flooding.

Situation of the river beds

Juruá Basin – Seven municipalities are in a state of emergency. The region is at the beginning of the ebb tide process, with a reduction in the level of the river in the last few days. The reference station, located in Itamarati, recorded a level of 19.10m. On May 25, 2015, the year of the biggest flood in the municipality, the river was at 20.59m (1.49m above the current level).

The biggest flood registered in the Juruá River, taking the city of Itamarati as a reference, was on April 7, 2015, when it reached the level of 21.91m.

Purus Basin – In the Purus River channel, three municipalities are on alert and three are in emergency situations. In Rio Branco, Acre, the river is in the process of ebbing and on Thursday, 26, there was no record of measurement in the reference station in the city of Lábrea, 701.82 kilometers from Manaus. During the same period in 1997, the year of the highest rise of the waters in the municipality, the quota of the river was 18.65m.

In the town of Beruri, the river level continues to rise, but there has also been no release of the level due to problems with the ruler that makes the measurement. On May 25, 2015, the year of the highest water level in the municipality, the river reached 21.97m.

Alto Solimões – In flood process, the Alto Solimões has five municipalities in a state of emergency and one in alert. The station that monitors the region in the municipality of Tabatinga registered 12.41m. On the same date, in 1999, when the channel registered the greatest flood, the river was 13.77.

Middle Solimões – In the region, three municipalities are on alert and another three in emergency. The station, which monitors the region located in Fonte Boa, recorded a level of 21.97m. On May 25, 2015, the year of the biggest flood in the municipality, it recorded a level of 22.60m.

Lower Solimões – In flooding process, the Lower Solimões presents two municipalities in alert situation and seven in emergency situation. The station, which monitors the region in the city of Manacapuru, recorded this Thursday, 26, the quota of 19.84m. In 2021, the year of the biggest flood, it registered a level of 20.69m.

Middle Amazonas – In the Middle Amazonas, the Civil Defense monitors six municipalities in a state of emergency and one in alert. The reference station, in the region located in the municipality of Itacoatiara, recorded a level of 14.76m. In the year of the biggest flood in the municipality, 2021, it recorded a level of 15.19m.
